I really like my job and my team of smart, caring individuals. Books, of course, are a key part of the library, but I think that staff are the heart of the library.
When Tami first became aware of a career in librarianship, “I was sold,” she recalls. “I thought, this is exactly what I want to do. I can serve my community and offer entertainment and education that could change someone’s life.”
Today, the Senior Librarian uses this passion to manage the Ask Us Service at Hennepin County Library.

These speedy researchers are like a 42nd library—a virtual location—providing answers at your fingertips, 24/7. The option comes in handy when you’re homebound, want privacy, or need help after hours.
Last year, the team answered nearly 40,000 inquiries ranging from “how do I download an eBook?” to “how are the Cubs doing this season?”
Need a Reading Recommendation?
The Ask Us Service also provides book suggestions.
You first complete a simple questionnaire to share your preferences. What’s a book you’ve recently enjoyed? What reading level and book format do you seek?
The team then uses a variety of tools, such as Novelist, a book search database. They consider factors like pace, characters, and tone. They browse summaries, reviews, and awards. In the end, 3-5 suggestions are sent your way. “People write back and say, you are so good—you suggested things I’ve already read! What else do you have?”
