A narrative becomes persuasive not through complexity but conviction.
Critically Acclaimed Novelist
Katie Kitamura is the author of five electrifying and psychologically complex novels including Intimacies, which was named one of the “10 Best Books of 2021” by The New York Times and was one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of the year. This haunting story of a woman caught between multiple truths was also longlisted for the National Book Award, the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, and was a finalist for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize.
Her earlier work, A Separation, was named a best book of the year by over a dozen publications, was translated into sixteen languages, and is being adapted for film. The highly-acclaimed author’s newest and most enchanting work of fiction, Audition, follows an unnamed female protagonist, whose life’s work is defined by interpretation—in this case as an actress embedded in the New York theater scene. In this compulsively readable, brilliantly constructed novel, two competing narratives unspool, rewriting our understanding of the roles we play every day—partner, parent, creator, muse—and the truths every performance masks, especially from those who think they know us most intimately. Like Hernan Diaz’s Trust and Lauren Groff’s Fates and Furies, Audition is a tightly wrought literary novel with an unforgettable, take-your-breath-away twist in the middle that will set readers buzzing about the narrative high-wire act that the author pulls off.
A recipient of fellowships from the Lannan Foundation and Santa Maddalena Foundation, Kitamura has written for publications including The New York Times, The Guardian, and Granta. She teaches in the creative writing program at New York University.
